The Silver Theatre was founded in Greenville by Bert Silver, who was born into a show business family and had a long history in the area’s show business. In 1915, he purchased the Phelps Opera House and renamed it the Silver Theatre. It was a mainstay of Greenville’s downtown, providing concerts and movies for generations of area residents before being torn down in June 1988.

The Silver Theater in our museum is a mini replica and includes some original artifacts such as the sconces and pilasters and a thermometer/playbill display. Movie reels and Bert Silver’s own hat and horn are reminiscent of the past. Posters of long-ago theater stars from Greenville, as well as modern-day locals who achieved fame in theater work hang on the walls.

The historical “Ghosts of Greenville’s Past” are still haunting our Silver Theater!

Are they real – or make believe? The “Ghosts of Greenville’s Past” will amaze and delight you in the Silver Theater of the Flat River Historical Museum! See them come alive before your very eyes to tell about their experiences in Greenville long ago. They’re so lifelike, you’ll think you can touch them. Come and see for yourself.
